Old Town Market Place Apartment

Warsaw, Poland
8.5 Excellent
Freta 20/24, Sródmiescie, 00-227 Warsaw, Poland

Overview

You know what? I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Warsaw, and this apartment on Freta Street really gets it right. The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of Old Town without dealing with the tourist chaos on the main square every single morning. Freta runs parallel to all the action, so you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Royal Castle and Market Square, but you can actually sleep at night – which, trust me, isn’t always guaranteed in this part of the city. The building itself has that classic Warsaw charm (it’s one of the reconstructed ones from after the war), and while the entrance might look a bit unassuming from the street, once you’re inside, it feels properly boutique without being pretentious about it.

The apartment itself surprised me – I mean, you expect these Old Town places to be cramped or weirdly laid out, but this one actually makes sense. The kitchen is small but functional (I managed to make proper coffee every morning, which is my baseline test), and the living area has these big windows that let in tons of light during the day. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail – good WiFi that actually works, proper blackout curtains, and a shower with decent water pressure. The decor walks that fine line between modern and traditional Polish style without feeling like a museum or a generic Ikea showroom. One thing though – if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage, just know there’s no elevator, but honestly, most buildings in this area don’t have them, so it comes with the territory.

Here’s what really sold me on the place: the neighborhood knowledge you get just by being there. Your morning coffee run takes you past this tiny bakery on Nowomiejska that locals actually use (not the tourist traps), and you’ll figure out pretty quickly that the best pierogi in the area are at this unassuming spot called Zapiecek – but not the one everyone knows about, the smaller one tucked away on Piwna Street. The 4-star rating feels right – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but everything works properly and feels thoughtfully put together. At an 8.5 rating, you’re getting solid value, especially considering you’re basically living in a UNESCO World Heritage site. The only minor downside is that weekend nights can get a bit lively (you’re in the heart of Warsaw’s nightlife district, after all), but weekdays are peaceful, and honestly, the energy of the area is part of why you’d want to stay here in the first place. If you’re the type who wants to walk everywhere and soak up the atmosphere rather than just check monuments off a list, this place gets it.
