Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Residence 1898? The name isn’t just some marketing gimmick – you can actually feel the history the moment you walk through those doors. There’s this perfect balance between old-world character and modern comfort that’s honestly pretty rare to find. The building has these gorgeous period details that someone clearly cared enough to preserve properly, but they’ve managed to update everything without making it feel like a museum.
I mean, with a rating like 8.8, you’re expecting something good, but this place delivers in ways that actually matter when you’re traveling. The rooms have that solid, substantial feel you get in older buildings – thick walls that keep things quiet, high ceilings that make everything feel spacious even when you’re dealing with European-sized spaces. The staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing too, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to navigate a new city. They’re the kind of people who’ll give you the real local recommendations, not just point you toward the obvious tourist spots.
What I really appreciated was how they’ve thought about the small stuff that can make or break a stay. The WiFi actually works properly (shocking, I know), the shower pressure is solid, and there’s enough outlets near the bed that you don’t have to choose between charging your phone and having a bedside lamp. The breakfast situation is well above average for a four-star place – they clearly source things locally and it shows. Honestly, the whole place has this lived-in authenticity that you just can’t fake. It’s not trying too hard to be boutique-y or trendy, which I found refreshing. Sure, it might not have all the flashy amenities of some chain hotels, but there’s something to be said for a place that focuses on doing the basics really, really well. If you’re looking for somewhere with genuine character that doesn’t sacrifice comfort, this is exactly the kind of spot you want to book.

Despite having some parts that were being renovated, or so it seemed, they were able to help us get settled into the hotel quite easily. There are several restaurants only 1 street away and a few small grocery stores. The room we stayed at was quite large and was a wonderful place to return to.
