You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Smulikowskiego 9 when I first booked it – honestly, the name alone had me stumbling over pronunciation. But this little apartment hotel in Śródmieście turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the guidebooks missed. It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street that feels authentically Warsaw, not touristy at all. I mean, you’re literally staying in apartment 7 of what feels like a regular building where actual Poles live their daily lives. The morning sounds aren’t tour buses rumbling by, but neighbors heading to work and the occasional tram in the distance – which, by the way, connects you to pretty much everywhere you’d want to go.

The space itself has that lived-in comfort that fancy hotels try to fake but never quite nail. Everything works (the wifi is actually solid, thank god), and while it’s not going to win any design awards, there’s something refreshingly honest about it. The kitchen setup is way more functional than I expected – I actually cooked a few meals using ingredients from the little market around the corner on Marszałkowska. Speaking of which, that’s your lifeline for groceries, late-night snacks, or whatever you forgot to pack. The whole Śródmieście area has this perfect balance where you’re close enough to walk to the Old Town when you want that postcard Warsaw experience, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with crowds of selfie-stick wielding tourists every time you step outside.

What really sold me on this place was how the host – I think his name was Tomasz – actually seemed to care about whether you had a good stay, not just whether you’d leave a decent review. He gave me this handwritten list of local spots that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps, including this tiny bar called Plan B that I never would’ve found otherwise. The check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that hotel lobby performance where you stand around waiting while they pretend to look up your reservation. I will say the building itself is older, so if you’re sensitive to noise, maybe pack earplugs. It’s not loud exactly, but you’ll hear your upstairs neighbor’s footsteps and the occasional door closing. Honestly though, that just added to the authentic Warsaw apartment experience for me. The location puts you within walking distance of the Palace of Culture (love it or hate it, you can’t miss it), and there’s this great milk bar – Bar Mleczny Familijny – about ten minutes away where you can get a proper Polish meal for the price of a coffee back home. For a 3-star place with an 8.9 rating, Smulikowskiego 9 delivers exactly what it promises: a genuine slice of Warsaw life without the tourist markup.
